Lauren Luloff dwells in the ethereal. Her paintings are akin to collage, blending together layers of sheer fabric with softly rendered hand painted patterns which are then elongated by canvas stretcher bars, creating a frame for her elegantly beautiful compositions. Her usage of textiles recall the domestic; traditional romantic or confining notions of which are interrupted by the rawness of the work. Says Ceysson & Bénétière, "All Luloff's works are united by a concern with the elements: the paintings were made outside in the fresh air, the liquid bleach burning images into fabric, while the ceramics were made from earth itself, and forged by fire."
In our new print edition by Luloff, we selected an image that emphasizes Luloff's uncanny echoes of home, intimacy, dreams and drama. A bleached out painted sunflower holds the foreground with intense contrast amid a swath of black. In the background, sheer layers interplay with solid forms, resulting in the refined grace that defines her body of work.
