With notes of pop and improvisational energy, James Ulmer's paintings of people, animals, fruit bowls and landscapes utilize a rudimentary vocabulary that is simple and universal. These works blend childlike elements with sophisticated, minimalist restraint. Based in Brooklyn, the artist received a BFA in Illustration and Design at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and has presented work at venues such as Marvin Gardens, The Hole, V1 Gallery, Salon 94, Jeffrey Deitch, and Chart Gallery.
In One Foot in the Door a human figure steps into an interior living space, where an orange cat sits on a couch—presumably having waited for its owner's return. Characterized by playful proportions and a vibrant color palette, the work demonstrates Ulmer's ability to tilt towards abstraction while maintaining clear edges that define varying images. The artist composes his paintings by transferring original drawings onto the computer, where he arranges shapes and colors until a definitive image is struck.
