On the occasion of his solo exhibition Dans La Lumière at Perrotin Paris opening this Friday on June 7th, JR is honored to present his new limited edition of 50 silkscreen prints. Each of the prints is uniquely finished with hand-drawn charcoal strokes. The effect is a striking visual that captures the movement and energy of one of the 153 dancers who performed in CHIROPTERA on November 12th, 2023.
Last fall, for one spectacular evening, the vast cave adorning the Palais Garnier façade became a stage curtain, revealing dancers filling scaffolding thirty-meters in the air. Part of JR's larger Retour à la Caverne project, CHIROPTERA, created with Damien Jalet and Thomas Bangalter, evoked Plato's allegory of the cave. JR's exploration of the dancer's radiant silhouettes in his new limited edition imagines the liberation of the chained prisoners from Plato's cave and their encounter with light.
For this edition, JR departs from lithography, embracing silkscreen printing and iridescent inks for the first time. The ink is applied in four shades, recreating how the audience's flashlights illuminated the dancers' costumes during the performance. The hand-drawn charcoal highlights enhance the dancer's movements, giving each print a unique character.
