When I was young and impressionable I was exposed to a book which was attractively-titled 'Orrible Murder! This lurid volume was compiled by a person named Leonard De Vries, and was an anthology of Victorian crime and passion taken from London's Illustrated Police News. It was lavishly furnished with engravings of murder, mutilation and the many ghastly ends suffered by many unfortunate people of the late Nineteenth Century. I spent many happy childhood hours perusing this disturbing volume.
Years later, whilst ostensibly working on the artwork for Radiohead's LP Kid A, I remembered this book and drew four pictures greatly inspired by the engravings in 'Orrible Murder. The Slowly Downward Manufactory released two of these four pictures as screen prints back in 2005; and now, a mere two decades later, we are finally releasing the third.
A bewitching graphic narrative, Tumultuous Explosion includes Volcanic Eruption, an Ursine Battle in the Heavens, Sperm Monsters, Witch Monkeys, a Burned Bear, A Benefit Gig and a number of Modified Bears. What more could anyone possibly need?
