Deer IV is one of the central works from my recent solo exhibition, Sintila. It was initially inspired by my memories of The Unicorn Rests in a Garden from The Unicorn Tapestries, which left a lasting impression on me as an art student visiting The Cloisters in New York.
From the back of the deer emerges the Tree of Life. Its newly formed antlers echo the tree branches that symbolize renewal, interconnectedness, and the continual cycle of growth. Suspended from its branches is a red bat, a traditional emblem of fortune. Because the words for "bat" and "blessing" are homophones in Chinese, the bat has long been associated with good luck, and when depicted upside down it signifies that blessings have arrived. The embossment also reveals five bats surrounding a sleeping face, representing the Five Blessings: longevity, wealth, health, virtue, and a peaceful passing.
Deer IV features a fully sculpted and embossed image, with a special dimensional gloss layer that highlights the translucent washes in the original painting. Multiple foil treatments are applied throughout, adding to the detail in the foliage. The surfaces comes alive as it shimmers in the light, rich in detail and meaning.
