The Death of Boto
by Tara McPherson
$80.00
This touching piece is based in Brazilian mythology. In the fresh waters of the Amazon River there live pink river dolphins called Boto. The Boto was legend to be a shape-shifter who could transform his entire body to look like a handsome young man, everything except the blowhole on top of his head. Dressing sharp and wearing a nice hat would make the perfect disguise. Attracted to the village by music and firework celebrations this dashing "man" would make his way into town following the music. The myth would have it that a young woman would meet this man and they would dance all night. Then she would take him home and spend the evening together. When she awakes in the morning he has disappeared back into the river and she is pregnant! This myth now servers as easy advice to pass down to young women reminding them "not to go dancing with any Boto". Some grandparents even warn of Boto in the East River. It's good advice to know who you are dancing with! They might just hop back in the river and float on.
Legend also has it that if you look a Boto in the eye you will have nightmares forever.
