Leviathan is the widely mythologized sea monster of ancient lore. By his supernatural strength, he has become the embodiment of evil, darkness, and chaos in Biblical and other Ancient Middle Eastern texts. You may also recognize the term from Herman Melville's novel, Moby-Dick—where Captain Ahab seeks vengeance upon the white whale—also given the name 'Leviathan'. Cusick's collage, made from meticulously connected fragments of maps and illustrations, is a meditation on childhood juxtaposed to the fretted adult perceptions of heaven and its antipodal hell. The cosmic sky, laden with saints and celestial deities, lords over the crepuscular mystique, the Leviathan's lair, lurking within the ocean's depths.
