"My latest works: L'ecluse, Ile de Ré and Atlantic Red 'were all originally sketched from the same point on the French island of Ile de Ré and are part of a series based on the historic 'L'ecluses' (stone wall fishing traps) that can be seen at Low tide.
I have become fascinated by these very old, once functioning structures that are now in decline but were vital to the islanders as a source of food. They remain as a reminder of a way of life dating back to the 14th century and the crescent shape of the 'dry walling technique' is a reoccurring motif in my recent work.
The ecluse fills with water at high tide and the sea recedes with the falling tide, leaving the fish trapped.
The subject coincided with my own experiences of sudden changes and departures and I have worked with this as a metaphor for tidal shifts that happen in life; the idea of exploring and sifting through what remains and using those remnants to open up the next stage which, like nature, inevitably comes around with it's own force.
I returned to the same part of this coastline where my family live in repeated drawings in my sketchbook, which varied from day to day depending on moods and weather conditions and resulted in very different approaches to the finished works which found a more abstract language as I became increasingly familiar with the subject matter.
It is important for me to always explore different mediums and techniques in order to push the same subject in different directions, which is why I use Monoprint and oil painting alongside lithography and screenprinting."
