Karel Funk's hyperrealistic paintings explore the dichotomy of intimacy and anonymity found in densely populated urban areas. Funk uses portraiture and texture as tools to explore this specific type of fragmented identity, as well as the interplay between extreme detail and the unknown. Referring to his body of work as "detailed subjective realism," Funk's compositions rest comfortably at the tipping point between photorealism and abstraction. In Untitled #56, 2012, Funk's awesomely precise rendering creates a sense of familiarity with the subject matter while maintaining his characteristic distance and mystery about his subjects.
