Kimia Ferdowsi Kline explores the chasm between her American upbringing and Persian heritage through vibrant color schemes and expressive composition. As members of the Baha'i faith, Kline's family was exiled from their native Iran before she was born, precluding Kline from a firsthand experience with her family's homeland. Painting served as a tool to explore her curiosity and imagination fueled by family narratives, old photographs and contemporary Iranian photographers. Says Kline, "The final images are patchworks of imagination, memory, and storytelling." In Two Heads, we are greeted by two gentle figures held in a moment of repose. The thoughtful serenity of the image is activated by the saturated colorscape that engulfs the characters. Expressive swaths of pale yellow, chlorophyll green, pastel pink, and opaque navy blue lend tension to the intimacy.
