Yves Tessier's unique style is akin to contemporary genre painting, with its focus on a variety of quotidian scenes. However, Tessier juxtaposes his ordinary scenes with idiosyncratic characters, settings, and behaviors, transforming them into multicultural visions. Tessier draws from numerous lineages of art history, inducing aforementioned genre painting, the posture-oriented graphic traditions of ancient art, and Japanese wood prints, resulting in a flattering of space and time. In Martha Schwendener's review in The New York Times of Tessier's recent solo show at Shrine (New York), she writes, "… The internet is also crucial [to Tessier's practice]. History and the present, politics and poetry, the sublime and the ridiculous can now be digitally compressed into clever memes. Mr. Tessier's images channel some of that strangeness and possibility."
