Farshad Farzankia is an Iranian painter based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Drawing visual language pioneered by Jean-Michel Basquiat and 1980s Neo-Expressionists, Farzankia blends together complex references to illustrate ambiguous yet powerful narratives of migration and social structures. His preferred recurring motifs include shoes, cameras, and tulips; respectively representing the Iranian migration journey; the artist's love of international cinema; and a harkening to iconic posters prevalent in his childhood in Tehran. The juxtaposition of these seemingly incongruous items results in Farzankia's unique lexicon of meaning, rendered beautifully in muted pastels contrasted with swaths of stark blackness.
