Francine Spiegel works across the mediums of painting, performance, and sculpture to slice open the role of female figures in the genre of horror. The women in her works are often simultaneously seductive and grotesque, coated in viscous liquids and rendered in vibrant color. Spiegel's subjects subvert the traditional victim role of the female character in a horror story, becoming monstrous through her distortions. In our edition Messiah of Evil, scenes from the 1973 cult horror film of the same name are layered together in the language of classic film posters of the era. Collectively, the figures linger in a looming sense of unease and leave twists of plot to the viewer's imagination - the most chilling place of all.
