In the new screenprint editions we’re presenting here she continues to focus on animals, specifically those from the wild. In Bear she manages to transform a creature that’s usually thought of as dangerous and intimidating into a rather friendly looking being as he appears to be sitting patiently, even perhaps slightly grinning, as we look back at him. The composition of this piece paired with the bear’s off-set posture makes me smile. I like him and I think he likes me.
In other works such as Horse Head and Mineral Stag, Susie brings another element into the way she creates her detailed drawings. In the former, at closer inspection, it can be seen that the image has been made up of smaller drawings of horses. All glancing in various different directions, their heads merge together to form a pattern that is not necessarily immediately noticeable when you first look at the work, and this to me is an interesting aspect. The same goes for Mineral Stag, where, this time using colour, Susie has created a version of one of her favourite animal subjects from a wild landscape of mountains, snow, rain, rocks and foliage as she brings the creature’s habitat back into itself.
The fourth print, Barcelona, Montjuic to Tibidabo, acts as a tribute to one of the artist’s favourite places as she depicts the view from one area of the city to another. Previous intricate cityscapes have been of Paris as well as Susie’s home town of Edinburgh; with an appreciation of architecture, in these works she explores her favourite constructions in these places through her signature edgy and linear style.
