Sternberg's work addresses humankind and the context of a false American dream, relating freedom to consumerism and the effect of this mentality on the environment. The original large-scale painting, A Poem For Ray, was featured in a show in Wainscott, NY this summer. Hints of gold representing synthetic wealth are painted over in a dark blue, which Sternberg describes as signifying “the earth taking itself back, the seas rising and blue becoming a beautiful dominate presence.” The title references the piece's interwoven text: a poem the artist wrote to Ray Johnson about the state of the world and the view from a bridge in Sag Harbor, NY, which Johnson jumped off to complete his last performance.
