The Montreal artist Jonathan Bergeron taught himself art from graffiti, punk rock album sleeves and skateboard deck art. These three defining standards live strong in Bergeron's oeuvre: The outlaw sensibility of graffiti, the hard edges of punk rock, the freedom and youthfulness of skateboarding. They all align in Bergeron's decisive style and subject matter which is pop culture put to the Southern California Calavera Aesthetic though very much existing in a surreal world of it's own. Jonathan's playful inclusions such as famous icons and children's toys within his body of work give a comedic release to the possibly tough lives of his characters. Having formerly gone by the monikers Zen and Johnnycrap, Jonathan's work has been showcased around the world to much acclaim throughout galleries and magazines.
