Rafael Maciel (a.k.a. Sliks ) is 28 years old, self-taught, and has been painting the streets since 1997. He started in Sao Paulo doing “pixação” until he discovered graffiti and he now spreads his unique style all around Brazil and abroad. In his work, the artist rejects logical conceptions and attaches himself into the unconscious as a source of inspiration. “I am always searching for new materials and techniques that might help me to express my world in my art.”
He attempts to express good feelings through his art, representing a mystical nature, mixing reality with fantasy in simple landscapes, and making us believe in a disturbed quotidian as can be found in big cities. Lines grow from the walls like plants filled with movement, making his perception capable of being as soft or aggressive, his work stimulates the viewer’s imagination through wide landscapes and imaginary beings. “Most of the time, I paint in dirty and forgotten places, turning them in positive and colorful places.” His urban interventions form a contrast with the environment, causing great impact and curiosity, which is of course the artist’s purpose.
