Katherine Bradford's solo exhibition, Fear of Waves, opened at CANADA last Saturday night. The painter's new body of work depicts swimmers diving, surfing, or floating in glowing pools of turquoise and dark violet celestial atmospheres punctured with star-like paint splatters. Noting American painter Marsden Hartley as a great inspiration, Bradford focuses on elements of space, color, texture and poetic composition. Here, two figures skim a water's surface just below a frothy horizon. With a nod to Adolph Gottlieb, a scarlet burst suspends a moment of the sublime.
