Evoking a nostalgic holiday seascape – and then abstracting this notion in turn – Thomas Scheibitz's print 'Family by the Sea ?' seems to comfort and contradict in equal measures. Painterly brushstrokes lap gently against sharp geometric forms, exemplifying Scheibitz's inimitable approach to the composition and deconstruction of an image. With its blend of expressive gesture and calculated fragmentation, Scheibitz manages to make unrecognisable forms recognisable – and vice versa – exploring a dynamic range of form, texture and palette.
'Family by the Sea ?' is a large silkscreen print produced with 27 colours plus a localised glaze, printed on 410gsm Somerset tub-sized paper using oil-based inks.
