Artforum named Trudy Benson's May 2016 solo exhibition at Half Gallery a critics' pick. Using an airbrush, textured rollers, and oil paint squeezed directly from the tube, Benson creates vibrant and richly textured silhouettes that hover in their respective planes over a backdrop of misty neutrals. Her distinct process of thickly overlapping layers of paint activates a feeling of distance between the foreground and background, the result a tableau of gesture reminiscent of both 80s nostalgia and modernist tradition. Red Current is chaotic yet contained, a composition of vibrating cadmium red against starkly patterned white to create what Artforum has described as "sheer retinal voluptuousness."
