Dike Blair's photo-based gouaches offer fragmented glimpses into seemingly banal subject matter enlivened by his uncanny painterly luminism. As Blair explained in his March 2016 ARTnews interview with Bill Powers, "['That first martini glow'] is a biochemical change that happens: edges become a little softer, glows become more erotic, your imagination loosens just a notch. I'm interested in luminosity and a certain kind of consciousness." In Untitled (Pool), Blair presents viewers with a cropped view of a swimming pool shrouded in darkness, the center plane bursting into focus with a cascade of light. A meditation on ephemeral and transitory details, Untitled (Pool) is a emblematic representation of Blair's oeuvre.
