Alice Tippit renders hard edged symbols, often juxtaposing seemingly mismatched objects to shed the shapes of their common interpretations. Tippit explores objects and meaning, challenging the viewer's perception of familiar icons while oscillating between positive and negative space, flat and expressive marks. In Plain, a common vase is anthropomorphized as it enters the composition -- a brushstroke becomes a hairstyle, the neck of the vase becomes human. Tippit created a work on paper specifically for Exhibition A to translate into print.
