In early 2011, Fintan Magee’s home city of Brisbane, Australia was hit with the worst flood in decades. During the disaster, 20,000 homes were damaged and 32 people were killed with the cost to the economy of the region at $10 billion. With extreme weather events becoming more and more common in the region many scientists have linked the severity of the floods to the ongoing issue of climate change.
This painting depicts two of the artist’s school friends who were affected by the flooding. The artist aims to use personal experience and stories to talk about broader issues relating to climate change and the environment.
