In Brandi Twilley's body of work, memory enhances as materials and time degrade; paintings enveloped in personal trauma deliver a compelling blend of reality and imagination. In her most recent body of work, Twilley explores images of her childhood home, which burned down in 1999, rendered in glowing light and enriched by twilight hues. Poignancy and nostalgia are communicated through her startlingly beautiful compositions, in which both the creator and viewer are left helpless to flames and emotion. In La Vie, our new print edition by Twilley now available on Exhibition A, a library book that survived the fire becomes a relic of layered memory — personal and art historical — and appears appropriately tattered and spellbinding. The negative space in this image, similar throughout Twilley's oeuvre, is unresolved and hazy becoming a metaphor for the shadows created by gaps in memory.
