Jesse Mockrin disrupts traditional imagery to deliver hauntingly beautiful portraits that explore constructions of space and the fluidity of form. Her style and subject matter are heavily influenced by the French Rococo, evidenced in the fashion, as well as free floating flora, tendrils, and fabrics that engulf her compositions. However, before her compositions slip into the overtly recognizable, Mockrin truncates the picture plane — a body is sliced in half or is perhaps not even there at all, as an eerily outstretched hand remains the only remnants of a physical body. When a figure is fully present, Mockrin celebrates and emphasizes its androgyny, illustrating both the limitations and expansiveness of perception.
