Life is an eternal sunset, an infinite daybreak in Danny Ferrell's lush and intimate paintings. Rendered in his characteristic Day-Glo hues, men are found in solitude within natural landscapes — sometimes accompanied by another male in the form of human or dog. This seclusion is solace, not isolation. They are totems, not Others. Caught in Ferrell's magical reality, the sitters ooze earnest sensuality and strength in vulnerability. In his own words, "the work functions like a daydream, where memory, longing, and external influences shape a personal fiction." His juxtaposition of art historical tropes — traditional portraiture styling, luncheons in the grass, and King Cavaliers — with contemporary consumer signifiers result in images of a specific millennial romanticism that challenges perceptions of masculinity and homosexuality.
