British artist David Shrigley's new limited edition blanket, EXIBITION (purposely misspelled), plays with language and the function of a practical object to create new humorous connotations: exhibitionist, an exhibition under the blanket or traveling exhibition.
The idea for the EXIBITION blanket came from a site-specific artwork Shrigley created for his recent solo show at Anton Kern Gallery, located in New York's famed Fifth Avenue shopping district. Outside the gallery on a flag pole attached to the building flew a huge flag, emblazoned with EXIBITION in large white block lettering. Directly next door to the gallery is British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood's flagship store with her highly stylized font on a similarly sized flag. As well as playing with the idea of exhibitionism, it can be read as a comment on the commercialization of art.
