Gaston's print, Diahann (2020), celebrates African-American history and culture. In his characteristic style, the image features an iconic figure that radiates Pan-African colors of red, black, and green. This ART FOR CHANGE commission celebrates Diahann Carroll, a trailblazing actress, singer, model, and activist. Carroll was the first Black woman to win a Tony Award for Best Actress for her role in No Strings, a 1962 Broadway Musical. The actress, who passed away last year, is perhaps best known for her Golden Globe-winning leading role in the TV sitcom "Julia," a series novel in its day for casting a Black woman in a leading role.
