Jon Key's paintings often feature his own likeness - the green, black, violet and red colours of his artworks render the figure flamboyant and provocative while the tight framing stifles his freedom. Key limits his palette to these four colours to acknowledge his Southern roots, his Blackness, his Queerness and his family. In other recent works, he has introduced other members of his family including his twin, parents and grandparents but also his 'chosen family' of friends and loved ones.
'The Man in the Violet Suit (Red No.1)' (2021) is Key's first print made exclusively for Counter Editions to coincide with 'Breakfast Under The Tree' a major new group exhibition at Carl Freedman Gallery, Margate, curated by actor and Talk Art podcast co-host Russell Tovey
