Russell Tyler's solo exhibition "Strange Variants" is on view at Denny Gallery in New York through April 2. The gallery writes, "While Tyler's work shows the influence of iconic abstract artists of the twentieth century such as Josef Albers and Philip Guston, his work is also unmistakably of its time, formed in an age when daily visual experience takes place in digital space and painting has to assert its immediacy." An extension of modernist tradition, Tyler's compositions are transportive yet self-contained within thinly bordered framing that reference the ubiquity of electronic screens found in the digital age of viewing. In OPGP, the coral perimeter pleasantly dissipates into the vibrancy of Tyler's created universe as it leaps across the canvas.
