ABOUT THE WORK Brad Phillips specializes in the nonchalant, intimate dross of experience — scribbled musings matched with existential reflection — capturing the exposed nerve endings linking pleasure to pain. Like when your heart has been broken so many times you rethink the urge to cry, Phillips confronts matters of emotional hardship with an almost scientific sense of humor. Typically rendered in either hyperrealistic brushstrokes or sketchbook text, the ostensible honesty of his work functions as a bait-and-switch, creating a complex opacity between subject, artist, and viewer that presents as searing transparency. Phillips' enduring fascination with American pop culture — more specifically, subverting its mores, tropes — has informed our last two collaborations and resurfaces again in our new release, Untitled (Sex, Drugs, and...), in which the famous hedonistic phrase has been altered to reflect Phillips' world of experiential references.
