Hyegyoung G Choi's winding painting practice engages social expectations, body image, identity and tension. Her figures wax and wane between desire and disgust. The artist's vibrant visual world compounds feelings of perversion and consumption through thickened impasto figures and a variety of textures and techniques.
Ophelia, Quieter and Colder engages the classic character and John Vincent Millais's famous composition from a contemporary and melancholic perspective. Depth is abstracted with swells of green and blue fauna creeping from the edges of the work. Ophelia lies consumed by her environment—the water and petals contouring the fleshed, technicolor corpse. The artist has hand-embellished each print with additional markings such as adding freckles to the figure's face and additional foliage surrounding her body, making each a unique work of art."
