Junior is a retired Arabber who itinerantly sold fruit throughout the streets of Baltimore on horse and carriage, maintaining a multi generational black tradition that has existed in the city for more than a century. This portrait was shot by M Holden Warren, a photographer from Baltimore who connected me to the horse stables on the West Side more than a decade ago. Holden is now the executive director of the Arabber Preservation Society and is advocating for support to keep the tradition alive as well as more stable housing for the operation in the future.
This linoleum block print was actually drawn eight years ago, but I now finally found the time to carve and print an edition. A portion of the proceeds goes directly back to the Preservation Society.
