TM Davy is best known for figurative paintings and pastels defined by radiant, luminous colors and symbolic illusions of form. Born and based in New York, NY, the artist centers relationships of love and self-realization, often depicting subjects engaged in intimate interactions. His creative practice also takes root in a broader tradition of meditation, frequently incorporating breathwork, song and experimental performance as corporeal extensions of painting. Davy's works have been the subject of solo exhibitions at venues such as Company Gallery, New York, NY; and Galerie Thomas Fuchs, Stuttgart, Germany. Additionally, they have been included in group presentations at the FLAG Art Foundation, New York, NY; MASS MoCA, North Adams, MA; Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA; and Tate Modern, London, United Kingdom; among others.
Inward Listening stems from a recent body of paintings that imagines caves as a metaphorical realm wherein individuals can transform fear into magical emotions. Davy conceives the subterranean spaces as wellspring portals that open from illuminated depths to reveal unbridled imagination. Distinguished by a dramatic contrast between light and shadow, Inward Listening positions a red fairy at the edge of its pictorial frame. The figure, starkly contoured against the rest of the image, stands as a witness to the colorful striations that radiate and cascade across the image. For this limited edition series, the artist will hand-embellish fifteen prints by adding a spectrum of fairies and tiny monsters through playful touches of gouache paint.
