George Condo balances the beautiful and the grotesque.
With long legs, sleek blonde hair and an archetypal pose, the subject of Fashion Model has the glamorous makings of a super star. Her picture-perfect image, however, is distorted by George's 'psychological cubism' – an attempt to represent multiple mental states in a single portrait. To externalise the horror within, George portrays her head morphing into a nose lined with sets of teeth. In turn, the figure satirises the way pervasive beauty standards warp our perception of reality.
Fashion Model is the final instalment in a quartet of print editions launched in support of Dia Art Foundation. George's painting has been meticulously translated into a 27 colour silkscreen in close collaboration with artisan printmakers at Make-Ready in London.
