A complex image in which sinewy branches and leaves cast overlapping shadows onto a dreamlike forest landscape, Split End centers on a split tree trunk lit by the warm, pink light of a setting sun. Bialke draws viewers' attention towards both the layers of underbrush that define the composition's foreground, and the trees that stand further off into the distance. The artist notes, "The title Split End evokes two visual paths—two different endings—that a viewer can take. The anthropomorphic trees and foliage relate to bodies and other organic matter, in an attempt to forge connections between all living things." For this limited edition, Bialke will number the prints and alter the sky in accordance to their sequential order, to chronicle the passage of time from late afternoon to night.
