Edition of 100
Wolfe von Lenkiewicz exhibits The Sign of Four, the artist’s first ever giclee prints. Works like Danse Macabre, She was Dolores on the Dotted Line and The Kingly Couch show reformatted versions of well-known illustrations and characters from a strangely familiar yet distorted Disneyland.
Lenkiewicz’s fascination with the appropriation of language and mythology is demonstrated in his bold experiments with iconography and visual combinations which straddle the margins of contemporary and traditional contexts, playful and offensive undertones, familiar and unfamiliar characters. These manipulated images reference the artist’s many inspirations and influences taken from art history, world history events, fictional lands and a diverse series of artists such as Balthus, Koons, Schongauer, Picasso and Brueghel. Lenkiewicz creates an ever- expanding cabinet of curiosities where history and popular culture merge into arrangements of uncanny figures in hyper real settings.
Visitors will be able to scrutinize the reworkings of a selection of some of the most recognizable figures in the story-telling world including Pinocchio, Alice in Wonderland and Snow White. The artist comments on one of his most recognizable characters, “Snow White is a symbol of both this all-American purity and this hypocrisy. She’s the image of absolute perfection, although, in fact, her story has been appropriated from the Brothers Grimm – because Disney liked to take things, commercialise them and make them much more popular. I’m interested in taking Snow White into the realm of a different kind of iconic image. So, for example, Snow White might become part-Picasso or part-Balthus. They’re powerful icons that collide.”
