Glenn Brown weaves a tapestry of references in this new limited edition print.
Renowned for transforming art historical and pop cultural imagery into obsessively detailed, often grotesque paintings, the British artist produces only a handful of works each year. For this edition, he reimagines his original oil painting Black Ships Ate the Sky (2020), itself based on two 16th-century portraits: Andrea del Sarto's Head of a Man in Profile Looking Up and an unknown artist's (Circle of Carlo Maratta) portrait of Alexander the Great.
In Higher Than the Sun, Brown subtly distorts colour and proportion from Black Ships Ate the Sky, while introducing a bold black bar at the image's base – homage to a vintage Star Wars poster. Created in close collaboration with our master printmakers at Make-Ready, the edition has been meticulously crafted as a wholly new creation in its own right.
