An ornate print by Harmonia Rosales celebrates the biblical figure of Eve as a symbol of the African diaspora.
Portrait of Eve embodies the artist's signature approach of reclaiming classical art to centre the empowerment of Black women. In the portrait, Harmonia replaces the traditional halo with visual representations of Ori, the Yoruba concept of spiritual intuition and destiny. Each symbol represents a milestone in Eve's story – a baby signifies birth, a snake marks loss of innocence, a tree symbolises systematic oppression, a boat references the transatlantic slave trade, coins represent the sale of bodies, and finally, a skull signifies the death of both Eve and Ori. The artwork also features as the front cover to Harmonia's first book, Chronicles of Ori.
