A play on concealment, 3 Women depicts three sunbathers whose identities are obscured in various ways. One figure's face is shielded by a plume of cigarette smoke, while another is turned away from the viewer; the third subject is entirely unseen—her presence only insinuated by a discarded bikini that also suggests her nakedness. The composition riffs on the ancient Greek story of the goddess Diana, who is stumbled upon naked by a mortal man named Actaeon while bathing with other nymphs. The tale recurs throughout paintings dated from the Renaissance to the present day, having been depicted by artists that range from Titian to Camille Corot. For this limited edition series, Orchard will render each print unique by adding hand-drawn objects such as fruit, wine glasses, and beer bottles, with a variety of mediums that include wax crayons, watercolor pencils, and pastel.
