The Raft, 2026, depicts two figures drifting across a colour-drenched waterscape. It is part of a new body of work on the theme of 'rafting', compromising four paintings created by Anderson especially for the exhibition. Formed of eight layers, this screenprint demonstrates the atmospheric use of composition and colour seen in Anderson's paintings. The swirling surface of the water appears to be mirrored in the sky above, creating a dreamlike continuity between the two elements. The scene is inspired by found photographs of 19th century Jamaica, a time of British colonial rule, slavery and abolition. Anderson grafts these found images onto an invented reminiscence from the early 20th century. The courting couple on the raft claim space for themselves within the tropical landscape. Love and leisure become quiet acts of resistance.
