Somebody Cares portrays the artist's tattooed torso, reclining in larger-than-life scale atop an asphalt highway. Various objects—a smashed beer bottle, a window pane that spells out the SOS distress signal, and a crashed vehicle—also appear, alluding to a sense of impending disaster. Regarding her artistic practice, Riley notes, "My work is about generational trauma, the search for self identity both online and within relationships, and how our experiences affect the way we move through the world. I aim to use autobiographical elements with broader language and imagery to translate universal experiences." Printed on white denim, each edition in this limited series features unique elements that include hand-embroidered text, and a machine-sewn overlay on the white contours of the depicted car.
Of ART FOR CHANGE's initiative to support the Brooklyn Museum, Riley adds, "The Brooklyn Museum has supported my work by showing it in the Brooklyn Artists Exhibition and, more recently, by adding it to their collection. I am honored to be a part of such an incredible legacy, and am proud to do what I can to support their exhibitions and programs."
