There Seems No Doubt portrays a recurring female figure who serves as the protagonist in an ever unfolding narrative. The archetypal character's skin is rendered pitch black, as an intentional expression of the color's fullness, presence, mystery, and opacity. Influenced by symbolic traditions that include the abstraction of the human form in West African masks and the use of the side profile in ancient Egyptian art, Haynes points her subject face towards the left, partially obscuring her facial features from the viewer. The artist notes, "Lately, I've been thinking deeply about costume, wings, portals, and environments as parts of this larger visual cosmology I'm creating. I am interested in images that feel familiar enough to enter, but strange enough that they suggest another world operating just beyond our own." For this limited edition series, Haynes will hand embellish twelve prints with unique elements that build on her speculative world.
