Part of an ongoing series, Light a Candle to the Big Sky draws inspiration from the makeshift altars and shrines left behind in caves and other hidden areas where migrants stop to rest, regroup, and pray for a safe journey. Within the composition, vibrantly hued flowers populate a landscape of layered hillsides, while a sun rises above parting clouds. A regular volunteer with the non-profit organization Border Kindness, Gibson notes, "In my art practice, I am always trying to find comfort in the world and a safe place for my mind to wander. My goal is to dive inside myself, pull out a feeling or memory, and place it on a surface like puzzle pieces. My landscapes are imaginary." For this limited edition series, the artist will embellish fifteen prints using oil sticks and oil pastels, introducing additional texture and dimension to each composition.
