Skeletons and skulls are common visual themes in art and are typically understood as memento mori. In 'Seer' Jackson refigures this familiar subject, using it instead to draw a parallel between the systems of the human body and increasingly prevalent circuit-board tehcnology.
The image of the skull overlays a gold-plated circuit board which is in the pattern of the nerves of the human brain. The circuit board carries power from an external solar panel battery pack to the two central LED eyes. With Jackson's signature enigmatic posture, the solar-powered circuits refer to both internal energy processes and extrenal energy systems. This analogy gives rise to questions about energy, alternative energy sources, the structure and the end goal of both technological advancements and of the human thought process. Above all we are left wondering, what is it that the 'Seer' sees?
How It Works:
'Seer' comprises a framed artwork and a solar panel. When the solar panel is charged and plugged in to the frame, it illuminates the LED eyes in the framed artwork. Charging the solar panel is easy - it only needs about an hour of exposure to sunlight and the panel will hold the charge for about a week.
