William Randolph Hearst once said that he thought of tapestries as the headlines of yesteryear. One might argue that tapestries also represent some of our first forays into abstract art or at least we get that sense gazing at the pattern pieces of Jeffrey Lee Lewis. His work makes us think about the richly textured tiles you find at The Alhambra in Spain or -- more recently -- the Rudolf Stingel exhibition at Palazzo Grassi in Venice. Jeffrey likes to describe his work as "a visual mantra devoid of irony" and sees his drawings as a form of devotional decoration.
