In this edition, Marc Quinn continues his investigation into identity, physicality and beauty through his 'Iris paintings', an ongoing series of work that depicts a single human iris - each person's unique 'map' of identity - in extreme close-up. In such magnification the iris' patterning becomes like a map or an image of terrain seen from space. Recently, Quinn has furthered this notion of mapping by including a real map of the world superimposed onto the iris itself, as a way of reminding us of our deep connection to the planet. In Eye of History V, which depicts the pupil as a fissure or hole in the centre of the image, the iris is coloured a vivid blood red and has a map of Asia clearly visible upon it.
