Cassandra MacLeod employs manual, mechanical and digital processes to manipulate photocopied images selected from art historical sources and illustrations. In her most recent body of work, MacLeod uses imagery of women’s faces copied from the paintings of Fernand Léger. Expressionless and devoid of individual features, these works demolish an idealized feminine beauty and challenge traditional representations of gender. As the figures buckle and twist into caricatures, they confuse the gaze which originally conceived them. For this particular painting, MacLeod used a Xerox machine, screenprinting, spray paint and a wash of color to distort and obscure the original image--the final result evident of her layered process.
