Liverpool Biennial is delighted to announce Another Place, the inaugural work in our Archive Edition series, created by the internationally acclaimed artist Antony Gormley.
Another Place is a reflection on the artist's iconic 2005 installation of the same name. This major installation, commissioned by Liverpool Biennial, comprises 100 cast-iron sculptures made from 17 different moulds taken from the sculptor’s own body, installed on Crosby Beach on the Mersey Estuary, all facing the open sea. The work covers a distance of almost 3km, with the pieces placed 250m apart along the tide line, and up to 1km out towards the horizon. The movement of local tides and daily weather conditions dictate whether the figures are visible or submerged. It is one of the most well-loved and widely recognised public art works in the UK.
Gormley's Another Place etching conjures perfectly the atmosphere of this installation. This piece shows a still, single figure standing in the sea: evoking the relationship between the natural elements, space and the human body. This etching celebrates the enormous impact that the installation has had locally and internationally.
Antony Gormley (b. 1950, lives in London) has developed the potential opened up by sculpture since the 1960s through a critical engagement with both his own body and those of others in a way that confronts fundamental questions of where human being stands in relation to nature and the cosmos. Gormley's work has been widely exhibited throughout the UK and internationally with exhibitions at Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, São Paulo, Rio di Janeiro and Brasilia (2012); The State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg (2011); Kunsthaus Bregenz, Austria (2010); Hayward Gallery, London (2007). Permanent public works include the Angel of the North (Gateshead, England), Inside Australia (Lake Ballard, Western Australia) and Exposure (Lelystad, The Netherlands). In 1994 Gormley won the Turner Prize and in 1997 he was made an Officer of the British Empire (OBE). In 2013 he received the Praemium Imperiale Prize in Sculpture.
Archive Editions is a new initiative by Liverpool Biennial that highlights key moments within the Biennial’s history, inviting artists to revisit those pieces and respond with a new work. Archive Editions presents an extraordinary opportunity to be a part of the Biennial’s legacy, as well as to own a work by a leading contemporary artist.
Archive Editions directly supports Liverpool Biennial’s programme of new commissions, exhibitions, talks and educational projects.
