Sandro Kopp is known for painting Skype portraits of illustrious subjects and friends such as Wes Anderson, Frances McDormand, Waris Ahluwalia, Ryan McGinley and Terence Koh. In a recent body of work Kopp requested the presence of their cuddly toys, which he exhibited in Fiercely Loved, his solo show at Timothy Everest in London last fall. Using oil paint, Kopp honors the adolescent memories instilled within a stuffed toy with earnestness and painterly formality. This print is based on a painting of the only "sitter" whose owner Sandro did not know personally. The bear in the portrait was given to him by street children in Xilitla, Mexico, the village where Edward James, the great surrealist poet and artist, built his jungle paradise "Las Pozas".
